In 2001, Maldivian environmental consultancy Seamarc Pvt. Ltd started working with Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa to improve coral cover around the resort…

…Little did either party know that their partnership would develop to become one of the most successful reef propagation projects of its kind in the world: Reefscapers.

coralToday, Reefscapers runs pioneering projects at the two Four Seasons islands of Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru in the Maldives. Sponsored by the resorts and their guests, the transplantation process involves attaching coral fragments onto a coral frame – produced by a local co-operative – to boost existing reef habitats and generate new ones.

With a survival rate of 80% across over 60,000 transplanted fragments of coral between 2005 and 2009 alone, the project has transformed previously empty reef flats into thriving marine ecosystems. Reefscapers is also investigating ground-breaking clone selection research intended to increase the resilience of reefs against the threat of global warming.

Welcome to the underwater world of the Reefscapers.
